According to the Journal of Business Continuity Planning (Vol 3, No. 1 10/2008), "ninety percent of companies hit with a major catastrophe never recover and only 43 percent of all companies in the same circumstances resume business. Among those that do reopen, only 26 percent are doing business two years later. If their mission critical data are lost, 50 percent file for bankruptcy immediately."
These statistics show the reality of what businesses experience in troubled times. You can dramatically increase the odds in your favor with a comprehensive Business Continuity Management Program.
The first step in building a complete BCM program is to develop an overall strategy that defines the purpose and approach that will be used to build the program. CSG consultants will work with you to develop a strategy and schedule to guide the effort. Policy also plays a key role in the success of BCM. Policy and guidelines covering business unit involvement, application development, testing, etc. are vital pieces of the program that CSG can drive based on our years of experience.
Representing the core of the BCM plan is the risk assessment and business impact analysis. In this phase, we will examine the potential risks to the organization and determine probability and consequences of identified risks. This eye-opening exercise will identify the threats, areas of vulnerabilty and effects an event could have on the organization.
Building on the risk assessment, our consultants will continue into the BIA. This exercise uses interaction with key business representatives to establish critical business functions, their recovery priorities and interdependencies, and quantifies the value of risk factors to the organization.
Based on the data and information formulated during the risk and business impact assessments, CSG consultants will develop a variety of plans reflective of the overall business continuity strategy. Examples of the plans to be developed include disaster recovery plans, communications plans, and incident response plans, just to name a few.
Unique to CSG, we bring our wide range of IT, Telecommunications and Data Center experience to the engagement, broadening the value of our consulting services. We have the ability to analyze your network and data architecture, identify data- specific security and availability risks, and tie them to IT-specific recovery plans and recovery strategies.
In addition, telecommunications has always proven to be a challenge to most organzations as they develop business continuty plans. CSG has staff with 20+ years of telecom experience that have the industry knowledge to develop the telecom components of the program. This is especially valuable in the call center arena.
Once your program is in place, it is essential to test your plans. CSG has the ability to bring a recurring test plan process to your organization to ensure the plans stay current.

Here is an example of how a relatively small event can cripple your organization.
This picture shows a small data center that was destroyed by a fire. Note the surrounding office space does not appear damaged, but all of the computing components needed for this company to operate are gone.
Can your company respond to a situation like this?
Is critical data protected?
Is customer information available?
How do you even start to rectify this situation?
The answer is to plan before disaster strikes. Having a business continuity strategy in place will help your business continue, retain customers and keep critical operations and revenues flowing.
